Join us as we uncover movement characteristics of structural masonry wall systems. We’ll compare the differences between movement joints in architectural veneer and in structural reinforced masonry. As well as identifying other strategies that will mitigate wall cracks and other distresses. By the end of this session, you'll learn how to detail movement joints for accommodating and/or restricting the movement of masonry materials.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the role of masonry movement joints in structural masonry walls.
  • Describe the purpose of movement joints and considerations for locating them.
  • Explore the movement properties of masonry materials and structural systems.
  • Investigate who is responsible for locating movement joints per the IBC/TMS 402/602 building code.

Beth Suminski, P.E., S.E., has worked for over 20 years as a structural engineer in the fields of consulting engineering, software, and continuing education. In her current position with FORSE Consulting, she serves as a Technical Consultant to the Steel Tube Institute, where she continues to pursue both the design and educational aspects of structural engineering.
