Part 2 of this 2-part program discusses all components of the tile assembly other than the tile itself. We’ll examine the basic mud-set and thin-set applications for tile and the pros and cons of each. You’ll learn about substrate preparation and flatness standards for conventional and large format tile, and the specified membranes. We’ll also discuss ANSI standards for minimum mortar coverage and application techniques to achieve that coverage. Finally, understand the requirements for movement joints and get an overview of current standards and specifications for qualified labor.
 Learning Objectives:
  • Explain the fundamental differences between mud-set and thin-set tile installation methods, including each method’s advantages and disadvantages.

  • Define the standards for substrate flatness for conventional and large format tile and methods for remediating a floor or wall that does not meet flatness standards.

  • Discuss the requirements for movement joints in tile floors and walls, recommended spacing, and standard details.

  • Identify the quality assurance programs used by the tile industry to ensure qualified labor and optimal installation.
