Part 1 of this 2-part program introduces the codes and standards governing ceramic tile types. We’ll discuss the physical properties of the tile and which tiles are suitable for different applications, with particular attention to large format tile and gauged porcelain tile. You’ll learn about material tolerances, minimum grout joint widths, and bonding and layout. We’ll also review allowable lippage standards and the effect of architectural lighting on the finished tile installation. Finally, understand what constitutes good workmanship and how critical it is to achieve a quality tile installation.
 Learning Objectives:
  • Identify ANSI standards, the TCNA Handbook, and other standards that govern the design and installation of ceramic tile.

  • Discuss the material and performance differences between mosaic tile, glazed wall tile, pressed floor tile, quarry tile, and porcelain tile.

  • Discover the new product category of gauged porcelain tile (GPT) and GPT panels, including the design possibilities and limitations of this ultra-thin, ultra-large material.

  • Define the manufacturing tolerances of tile, and how those tolerances impact the design and installation of the finished assembly.
