National Guard Press Release: Open letter from the President-Secretary Treasurer of BAC Local Union 1 MN/ND/SD

April 19, 2021

Press Release:

The terrible tragedies that have fallen upon our cities have resulted in the need for the National Guard to be deployed by order of the Governor of Minnesota. The men and women of the National Guard serve all Minnesotans and deserve the respect of the citizens that they protect as do all the men and women of our armed forces.

Last week, a show of force was thrust upon these men and women as they were resting from their duties. This action has blemished the name of labor by stating to the public that Labor Unions do not want the National Guard in their house. This is a travesty and the actions of the few do not represent the whole.

As President of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local #1 Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, a citizen of Minnesota, and former public servant I will not stand for this and believe that my membership would agree. I would gladly open my home to any of the men and women of the armed forces and appreciate their sacrifice to this great nation.

Although the labor unions do not always see eye to eye, we all should support the protectors of our country.

In an effort to communicate to the MN AFL-CIO and its affiliates that this is intolerable, the following action will be taken:

Effective immediately, this organization will cease its affiliation to the Minnesota AFL-CIO and all its regional labor federations. These types of actions will not be supported by the members money. The treatment that has been shown by these organizations towards our protectors of this great state and country is inexcusable.
